Upcoming Dharma Centre Schedule
The Meditative Approach to Stress, Anxiety, and Depression Workshop will be offered on the evenings of , January 16,17, & 18 (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday), at 7PM. All are welcome.
This series of talks will be of interest to those who suffer from stress, anxiety, and depression, their friends and families, as well as physicians, therapists and care-givers. Each session will last approximately ninety minutes, with lots of opportunity for questions. The talks are geared toward a secular audience. The language will be straightforward, the approach practical and non-religious. The intention is to provide participants with some understanding about how we humans get into unpleasant, negative, painful, and unproductive states of mind and to offer some useful meditative remedies. The suggestions are not meant to supplant or replace medical or psychological treatments that participants might already be involved in. They are meant to augment and support positivity and calm. The program develops a coherent theme over the three sessions so it makes sense to attend the whole series. There is no charge for this program: In the traditional way a bowl will be set out for donations. All are welcome. Note also that experienced practitioners are encouraged to attend: Your presence will support those who are investigating meditation for the first time.
Cultivating Lovingkindness - walk-in retreat with John de Jardin, Janurary 20-22
The Buddha classified Lovingkindness (metta) as one of the four "Divine Abidings" (Brahmavihara)-the others being Compassion (karuna), Sympathetic Joy (mudita) and Equanimity (upekkha)-and considered its cultivation to be of central importance on the path to awakening.
In perhaps the most important discourse in the Christian canon (Matthew 5 - The Sermon on the Mount), Jesus also recommends the practice of boundless universal love and associates it with divine perfection. During this non-residential weekend retreat we will consider the
similarities and differences between the Buddhist and Christian approaches to lovingkindness, and explore various means of encouraging its development.
Friday, Jan 20: Evening talk, 7PM
Saturday, Jan 21: Talks at 9:30AM and 1PM, pot-luck lunch, lots of time for questions and practice.
Sunday, Jan 22: Talks at 8AM and noon, pot-luck lunch, lots of time for questions and practice.
Lama Karma Tsundulp Lodro will be teaching at the Dharma Centre for the month of February.
Lama Lodro, a great Dharma teacher, is coming to Winnipeg for most of February. Lama Lodro is encouraging participants to set up home-based retreats for themselves during his visit here. To accomodate working people Lama Lodro has designed a program that allows participants to come the Dharma Centre each morning for instruction and then devote a few hours each day to meditation at home. There will be no formal charge for this teaching, but please bear in mind that Lama Lodro is a traditional teacher who lives entirely by the bowl. Thirty dollars Dana per day is suggested. In addition, a bowl will be set out for the Dharma Centre. Ten dollars per day is suggested. In the future it will be very expensive, if not impossible, to fly Dharma teachers around North America. So don't waste this extended opportunity to study with a very accomplished being right here in Winnipeg.
